A tiny Caribbean treasure: Dushia’s Flabellina

Meet Dushia’s Flabellina (Edmundsella dushia, formerly Flabellina dushia) — a tiny aeolid nudibranch and a beautiful reminder of just how much life is hiding in the smallest corners of Sint Maarten’s reefs.

This delicate nudibranch can reach only around 15 mm, with a mostly white body and clusters of slender cerata carrying striking orange-red coloration. Those cerata aren't simply decorative — they contain extensions of the digestive system and also play an important role in respiration.

Edmundsella Dushia found at Carib Cargo Sint Maarten

Originally described from the Caribbean, E. dushia has been documented from places including Curaçao, Jamaica, Florida, the Bahamas and Martinique.

Finding one takes more than just looking — it takes slowing down, getting close, and paying attention to the details.

This nudibranch was found at Carib Cargo.

That's one of the rewards of diving Sint Maarten. Beyond the turtles, rays and colorful reef fish, there's an entire miniature world waiting to be discovered.
